DISC HERNIATION/HERNIATED DISC

When discs (See DISC) degenerate (See DISC DEGENERATION), the wall of the disc, called the annulus becomes weak.  The degenerated stuffing (disc material/nucleus pulposus) of the cushion (disc) begins to come out.  When it comes past the outermost layer of the annulus, the disc is called herniated.

Although herniated disc is the correct term, some people refer to a herniated disc as slipped disc, extruded/extruding disc, prolapsed/prolapsing disc and protruded/protruding disc.  Note: Most all disc herniations are degenerative but some disc herniations can be from trauma.
